[ARCHIVED] City responds to minor sewage spill

For Immediate Release
Date: September 21, 2015

City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 4 East Gazebo Lane on Wilmington Island at 10:56 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2015. The spill was the result of an air release valve failure. The total volume discharged was estimated to be 1200 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was corrected by 11:30 a.m. City crews shut down the lift station and replaced the air release valve. The manhole will also be enlarged and a manhole level alarm installed. The ditch was contained and by-pass pumps were set up. Lime was placed on the area that came in contact with the discharge. City jet vacs removed water from the ditch and then discharged the contaminated water into the City sewer system. Spill notifications will be placed at spill site, behind 218 Deerwood Drive, and where the detention ponds flows into Betz Creek. All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
