City crews respond to major spill

SAVANNAH (April 13) – City of Savannah Sewer Conveyance staff responded to a major spill on April 12 at 109 Nettles Industrial Boulevard.

The spill resulted from a break on Wilshire Water Reclamation Plant and Hunter Army Air Field’s shared post-treatment discharge force main upstream from its permitted discharge location on Springfield Canal. An estimated 86,640 gallons was discharged before the break was repaired. State Environmental Protection Division guidelines classify this as a major spill, which is a spill over 10,000 gallons. This spill incident occurred from the pipe line upstream from its designated discharge location.

The City is distributing notifications via a news release and area signage. All agencies (Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Health Department and the City of Savannah Office of Marketing and Communications) were notified per state guidelines.
