Arena topping out ceremony ushers in next phase of construction

On April 14, the City of Savannah celebrated a major milestone for the Savannah Arena project with the topping out ceremony.

It symbolizes reaching the maximum height of the structure. By topping out, the arena moves into the next phase of construction, including enclosing and finishing the interior of the building.

City council members and interim City Manager Michael Brown signed a beam that was hoisted into place at the top of the structure.

The beam included an American Flag and a tree. A tree is placed atop a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits and energies displaced in the construction. The tree symbolizes the safe completion of the framing of the structure and a wish for continued good luck for the future of the building project and eventual occupants.

The arena project remains on time and on budget and is scheduled to open in early 2022.
