[ARCHIVED] COVID-19 vaccine site to open at Civic Center

The City of Savannah, Gulfstream Aerospace, Hospice Savannah and Savannah Technical College are partnering to bring a COVID-19 mass vaccination site to the Savannah Civic Center, 301 W. Oglethorpe Ave.

"This site is perfect for a variety of reasons," said Mayor Van Johnson. "First of all, you have walk-up access, and everybody knows where the Savannah Civic Center is."

The vaccination site will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting April 7. Visit Vaccine.HospiceSavannah.org to make an appointment. Appointments are not required, but they are encouraged.

Hospice Savannah is the medical provider for the site, and Savannah Technical College nursing students will help administer vaccines. The site will offer the Moderna vaccine and can give about 1,100 shots per day.

"It is a great privilege to be part of what is probably one of the most profound community efforts that we've had in a very long time across Savannah," Dr. Kathleen Benton, president and CEO of Hospice Savannah, said. "This is serving the greatest need."

This site is a walk-in clinic, making sure vaccines are convenient and accessible to those without personal transportation.

"If you don't have a car, a drive-in site is not going to work for you," said Mayor Johnson. "Walking, people can come from lunch. People on the bus route can come. They can get off and get back on."

Vaccines will be given in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Arena, and people will enter from the Liberty Street side of the building. Anyone driving to the site must park and walk inside.
