City Hosting Savannah Jazz Lecture 


SAVANNAH, GA. (Aug. 13, 2019) — The City of Savannah Municipal Archives will host a lecture on the history of Jazz in Savannah on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. “Savannah Jazz: A Panel Discussion on the History of Jazz in Savannah” will take place at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center, 201 Montgomery Street. The program will be moderated by lifelong educator and former Savannah Mayor, Dr. Otis S. Johnson and features four notable local musicians and educators.

“The City of Savannah is pleased to bring together such a diverse and knowledgeable group to share the rich history and tradition of jazz in Savannah.” said Luciana Spracher, Municipal Archives director.

Panelists include:

Dr. Thomas J. “Teddy” Adams is a renowned musician, one of the first inductees in the Savannah/Coastal Jazz Association Hall of Fame and co-founder of the Coastal Jazz Association and Savannah Jazz Festival.

Mr. Theron A. “Ike” Carter is the former president of the Coastal Jazz Association, former chairman of the Savannah Black Heritage Festival, and a frequent lecturer on the history and development of African American music. He also served as the director of WHCJ radio station for over twenty years.

Dr. Charles J. Elmore is a local historian, retired Professor Emeritus of Humanities and former head of the Mass Communications department at Savannah State University. He is also the author of “All That Savannah Jazz: From Brass Bands, Vaudeville, To Rhythm and Blues.”

Ms. Huxsie Scott is regarded as one of the greatest jazz/blues vocalists from the southeast region. She is the original vocalist for the Savannah Jazz Orchestra and was a bronze medalist for the 2004 American Traditions Competition in Savannah. Ms. Scott was inducted into the Savannah Tribune Gospel Hall of Fame and the Savannah/Coastal Jazz Association Hall of Fame.

The lecture begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5 and is free and open to the public. Early arrival is recommended as space is limited. Nearby parking is available in the Liberty Street Parking Garage.
