Getting Here: All classes take place at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center at 201 Montgomery St. Limited (paid) street parking is available near the SCAC. The closest parking garages are Liberty Parking Garage on Liberty and Montgomery and Robinson Parking Garage on Montgomery St. across from Chatham County Courthouse. 
There is an accessible drop-off area on Montgomery St, and one accessible parking space next to the building on Turner Blvd. Additional parking on Turner Blvd. may be available upon request. Additional accessible parking spaces are in City parking lots and garages.

Registration notes: due to the manual nature of our registration process, waitlisted classes may not be accurately reflected at the time of registration submission. A member of our customer service staff will contact you after receiving your registration form for payment and to confirm your spot. In the case of our most popular classes with many registrants, we will move to the next registration if we have not heard back in 24 hours time.

Pricing: Resident pricing is available for residents who have an address within the City of Savannah corporate limits. Reduced pricing is available for qualifying City of Savannah residents. Documentation required. View the application form here.

This eight class series will focus on the rhythmic roots, instruments and playing techniques for Samba Afro, particularly the style performed by the Bloco Afro Ilê Aiyê from Salvador Bahia. Students will learn how to play the various instruments and also experience playing an arrangement as an ensemble. 

Traditional instruments will be provided for the classes, but if you play Djembe or Congas bring your drums to class, this style of Samba is great for those instruments! 

As always, drop ins are welcome, but to fully appreciate and gain the most from this class, we recommend that students try to attend all eight classes.

Studying abstract, symbolic, and representational art styles offers different approaches to image making and opens up opportunities for curiosity and success. This class explores the many ways to create art, beginning with movement, sound, and writing, followed by exploration of self-expression through a variety of media. Students will select among Abstract, Representational, and Symbolic styles to create two studies and one completed work.

Students should bring to the first class an image of an artwork which moves them and an object that can illicit aggravation, inspiration, joy, sadness, or some other emotional quality. There is a short Yoga practice during the first session, mats are available, but students may wish to bring their own mat and water.

Watercolor Exploration: Painting Places

Large Format Painting with Pastels

This class will focus on painting a large-format work in soft pastels. We will explore various methods and materials by painting a subject that lends itself to the various techniques. Returning students will learn new underpainting techniques and texturing skills.  Students will complete a large format pastel work on a paper of their choice and have the opportunity to exhibit their work in the year-end student/faculty art showcase. 

There will be photo materials available but working from your own sources is encouraged.  

The instructor has pastels and pastel pencils to use. If you want to buy your own pastels, please wait until after the first class. Please bring any that you already have but, PLEASE NO OIL PASTELS, they do not mix.  Other supplies are not included, see the class supplies list for more information. Expanding on the “Acrylic Painting: Foundations” class, “Beyond the Basics” delves further into image-making and the potentialities of acrylic paint. A variety of techniques, subjects, and approaches will give students the confidence to find their own painterly voice. Students interested in this class aren’t required to take “Foundations” first, but are expected to have a basic knowledge of drawing and some painting experience.

This course will teach the fundamental techniques of using the potter’s wheel. We will cover throwing, trimming, and glazing techniques and by the end of the class you will be able to use the wheel to create pots and other thrown pieces. This course is appropriate only for students with little or no prior experience.

Take your metalsmithing skills to the next level! This class will cover techniques that go beyond simple fabrication. Learn to solder multi-operational designs together by adding ring shanks to settings and hidden bails and pinbacks to pieces. New projects for this session include wax carving and simple salt and sandcasting techniques. 

Students will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in the year-end student/faculty art showcase at the SCAC. 

Copper, brass, equipment, and tools are provided for all class projects. If you would like to work in silver, you can purchase materials from sources like Rio Grande or Ex Libris on MLK. 

It is recommended that students purchase The Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight

Students registering for this class should have completed a beginning jewelry class that taught soldering techniques using an acetylene or oxy/propane torch. If you do not have experience soldering, please register for our Foundations of Jewelry & Metalsmithing class. 

Participants are welcome to attend Jewelry Open Studio, which is included in the registration fee.

Ceramics students are welcome to attend Clay Open Studio hours, included with registration. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Open studio hours are Wednesdays and Fridays 12:00-3:00pm and Saturdays 12:00-2:00pm.

“Violin exploration” is a music class intended to introduce children to the smallest member of the string family: The Violin. 

We will learn through games, songs, practice and repetition of one skill at a time: 

    Parts of the violin.

    How to hold the violin and bow.

    How to use the bow on the violin.

    How to pluck the string violin.

    How to take care of the violin.

    The staff and notes. 

    Basic Rhythms.

    How to make music on the violin.

    How to read and play basic melodies on the violin.

The “Parent and me” music class is a fun activity where parents and their babies can spend quality time and build a strong relation through music stimulation.

Online
Registration for classes can be completed using our online form.  Payment will be completed by phone after registration is submitted. Your registration is not complete until payment is received. Staff will reach out for payment in the order your registration was received.

Due to the manual nature of our registration process, waitlisted classes may not be accurately reflected at the time of registration submission. A member of our customer service staff will contact you after receiving your registration form for payment and to confirm your spot. In the case of our most popular classes with many registrants, we will move to the next registration if we have not heard back in 24 hours time.

Financial assistance: Reduced pricing is available for qualifying City of Savannah residents. The reduced fee program is available for qualifying youth and adults with qualifying SCCPSS Free of Reduced Lunch form, TANF, SNAP, or qualifying income tax statement. Please review the application and required documentation here.

Adults may qualify for a 25% reduction on class pricing. Youth may receive up to a 50% reduction on class pricing. Please note this program is available to residents of the City of Savanah only. Letters of free or reduced lunch can be obtained at the Savannah Chatham County Public Schools System Nutrition office at: 208 Bull St. Savannah, GA. 31401

Class Procedures and Policies

Cancellations and Refunds
Cultural Resources reserves the right to cancel, to combine or reschedule classes, or to change class instructors, when necessary. • Cultural Resources will not provide make-up classes or issue refunds to those who miss classes due to illness or other events beyond our control. • If Cultural Resources cancels a class for any reason, all registered participants will be informed as soon as possible and extended the opportunity to transfer to another class. If participants do not wish to transfer to another class, a refund will be processed. • Participants may withdraw from a class with no penalty up to one week before the first class meets. After that time a 50% withdrawal penalty will be applied. Notice of withdrawal must be made in WRITING to Cultural Resources. • No refunds will be issued after the first class. • Failure to attend first class session without prior notification could result in cancellation of registration without refund.

Attendance Policies
Early Arrival: Participants will be allowed into the classroom no earlier than 10 minutes before the class is scheduled to begin. • Late Arrival:  A grace period of 15 minutes is allowed for late arrivals. After that time Cultural Resources reserves the right to deny entry to class at the discretion of the Instructor. Participants are encouraged to call ahead to the Savannah Cultural Arts Center in the event they will arrive late. No refunds will be given for classes that are missed due to late arrival. • Cultural Resources reserves the right to cancel a class that has zero attendance for two consecutive classes. • Cultural Resources reserves the right to refuse enrollment to participants with a history of unacceptable behavior.
