Service Brewing

Posted on June 7, 2019 at 7:24 AM by Saja Aures

Archaeologists have found evidence of beer production dating back to the 5th millennium BC in what is now Iran. Today in the United States, there are more than 7,000 breweries in operation. Worldwide, beer is the third most-consumed beverage by people.

From its ancient origins to the specialty craft brewing of today, water has played an integral role in the creation of beer. We visited with Kevin Ryan, CEO of Service Brewing Company, to talk about their use of City of Savannah water.

“Beer is mostly water, about 90% water,” said Kevin, as we walked through the Service Brewing Company headquarters on Indian Street, “And historically, beer styles have been driven by the flavor profile of the water where they’re brewed. Savannah water is actually pretty similar to the water in Pilsen, where Pilsner beer originated.”

Kevin knows so much about Savannah water because he’s studied it in detail. The Service Brewing team uses regular laboratory testing to determine the pH and mineral content of our local water. Based on the findings, they can make minor tweaks to the beer in production, tinkering their way toward perfection.
