The Housing Department’s sustainability initiative is focused on creating durable affordable housing units with low operating costs through the use of Green Building practices.
Sustainable Housing
All new construction financed by the Housing Department is Earthcraft certified- including the 500+ multi-family and single-family units planned for Savannah Gardens.

In addition to sustainability integration into existing programs, the Housing Department pursues meaningful collaborations that decrease the operating costs of City residents housing through the use of Green Building practices

Homeowner Energy Efficiency Program

In addition to New Construction, the Housing Department manages a Homeowner Energy Efficiency Program that provides forgivable lending for home improvements that improve the efficiency of the home.

USGBC-Savannah Green Building Awards

The City of Savannah is partnering with the US Green Building Council's Savannah Branch to offer the USGBC-Savannah Green Building Awards. The awards recognize achievements in green building in the residential and commercial sectors, as well as recognizing significant contributions to the local green building and sustainability fields from an individual and organization. Operation Green Street

Operation Green Street is a partnership between the City of Savannah, the Savannah Branch of the US Green Building Council and local volunteers. The US Green Building Council provides materials and volunteers and the City provides coordination of activities to allow for energy efficiency improvements for Savannah families. Improvements include do-it-yourself style building upgrades such as water heater insulation, attic hatch insulation, weatherstripping, lightbulb upgrades and more.
