What is a Watershed?
Abercorn Creek, a tributary of the Savannah River
A watershed is an area of land that drains into one body of water. Savannah lies within two watersheds the Savannah River Watershed and the Ogeechee River Watershed. Both of these rivers are extremely important to our past and our future.
The Savannah River supplies drinking water to over 475,000 people and is the City's future source as we reduce our use of groundwater from the Floridan Aquifer.
The City of Savannah's Water Resources Department participates in the Savannah River Clean Water Fund, an initiative to preserve the Savannah River as a high quality source of drinking water.
The Vernon River
The Vernon River is a part of the Ogeechee River Watershed. Our daily activities are negatively impacting the water quality in this beautiful river. Click on the link below to learn more.
