All classes are held at the Cultural Affairs facility located at 9 West Henry Street
(2 blocks south of Forsyth Park between Bull and Whitaker Streets)

One Day Workshops
All workshops will be notified when work is ready to be picked up. It is usually within 7-10 days.

Ceramics:
Surface Design Workshop
Instructor: Clair Buckner
Ages 17+
Friday, January 13, 2017, 10:00am – 2:00pm
Participants will explore alternative decorative techniques including the use of slip, wax resist, and ceramic decals just to name a few. A variety of finishing techniques will be discussed and your works will be fired. All skill levels are welcome.
$55/$50 city residents

Raku Workshop
Instructor: Clair Buckner
Ages 17+
Friday, January 20, 2017, 10:00am – 2:00pm
Come explore the fast fire world of Raku! We will demonstrate different firing techniques and finishes including glaze, horse hair, and naked Raku. Three small pots will be supplied to you OR you can bring up to three bisque pots of your own. Previous ceramics experience is required.

Parent and Child Clay Workshop: Balloon Belly Bird Houses

Ages 5+
Saturday, February 25, 2017, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Come join us for a parent and child workshop! Let your imagination run wild and make a one of a kind balloon-belly birdhouse! Students will learn basic hand building, sculpting and decorating techniques.

Monday Mud: Special Topics Workshops – Clay Whistles

Ages 12+
Monday, January 30, 2017, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Make music from mud! Join us for a clay whistle workshop where we will be designing and constructing musical instruments utilizing basic hand building techniques and simple tools. A variety of finishing techniques will be discussed and your works will be fired.

Monday Mud: Special Topics Workshops – Bird Houses/Feeders

Ages 12+
Monday, February 20, 2017, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Get ready for spring by spending an afternoon making your one of a kind clay birdhouse\feeder! We will work with slabs and underglazes to design your feathered friends a fun place to visit.

Glass:
Methods in Glass Fusing NEW
Instructor: Kristin Fulford
Ages 17+
Saturday, February 25, 2017, 9:00am – 1:00pm
This 4-hour workshop will focus on multiple techniques for fusing various forms of glass. We will create our own silicon molds, explore freeze and fuse, powdered glass frit, and single layer fuses with photo transfers. Students will finish this workshop with 2 small pendant sized pieces of glass, their own silicon mold, and a layered photograph glass piece. No experience is required. Students, please bring to class a favorite photograph that you would like to transfer to glass (no larger than 4x6) as well as a small (quarter-sized) object with which to create your mold.
Class is limited to 8 students.

Painting:
En Plein Air NEW

Saturday, February 18, 2017, 9:00am – 1:00pm
Let’s take it outside! Join us for this 4-hour explorative workshop where we learn the basics of painting landscapes and nature while out in nature. Class will begin and end at 9 W. Henry St. with the majority of the lesson in Forsyth Park, under the oaks. All materials will be provided for students.

Fibers:
Arm Knitting NEW

Ages: 12+
Tuesday, February 13, 2017, 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Don’t have any knitting needles? No worries, you can use your arms! Learn to knit large works with only yarn and yourself. No previous knitting experience required.

Youth Six-Week Classes

Performance Arts:
Improv for Teens, Saying Yes! And… (6 Weeks) NEW
Instructor: Cydnei Prather
Ages 14-17
Mondays, January 23 – February 27, 4:00pm – 5:30pm
This six-week class guides new improvisers into the world of make-believe and creativity. Students will learn to support their peers, make positive choices, and employ acting skills. Students will also learn to create scenes and participate in group games and exercises. Students will get to perform for friends and family during a recital after the six-week course concludes.
$75/$70 city residents

Actor’s Studio: Intro to Acting for Youth (6 Weeks)
Instructor: Cydnei Prather
Ages 9-13
Wednesdays, January 25 – March 1, 4:00pm – 5:30pm
For six weeks, students will participate in activities and exercises to help them make character choices and learn how to convey emotions to an audience. From monologues to silent scenes, blocking, and expressive movement, this course will help prepare you for all the elements of theatre and help you conquer the stage!

Metalsmithing and Jewelry:
Teen Jewelry Making (6 Weeks) NEW

Ages 13-18
Wednesdays, January 25 – March 1, 4:00pm – 5:30pm
This six-week afterschool class will teach young adults of all skill levels some awesome methods to create wearable works of art. Students will explore basic jewelry making techniques like wire wrapping, enameling, kumihimo, beading, and macramé. Students will complete the session with 6 pieces of jewelry art.
$85/$80 city residents

Literary Arts:
Write to the Point! Creative Writing for Youth (6 Weeks) NEW
Instructor: Cydnei Prather
Ages: 12-16
Tuesdays, January 24 – February 28, 4:00pm – 5:30pm
Join this six-week course to experience the world of poetry and creative writing! Through writing activities focused on plot, dialogue, character, and rhythm, students will learn the aspects that make a well-crafted story and put pen to paper to create their own tales.
$75/$70 city residents

Painting and Drawing:
Beginners Drawing (6 Weeks)
Instructor: Adam Uhlig
Ages: 12+
Wednesdays, January 25 – March 1, 4:00 – 5:30pm
This six-week class will focus primarily in foundational drawing techniques. Students will learn the fundamental principle of using basic shapes to construct images. Students will explore drawing with stylization, movement (gesture drawing), and how to develop details. As students learn and discover their own shape language from these classes, they will be able to use these basic drawing principles to build their future drawing skills.
$75/$70 city residents

Ceramics:
Youth Pottery (6 Weeks)

Ages 8-12
Wednesdays, January 25 – March 1, 3:30pm – 4:45pm
It is time to try your hand at the potter’s wheel! Join us in the studio for an introduction to all things clay. We will be using the wheel and hand building techniques to make fabulous functional wares! Be a maker and come clay with us!

Adult Six-Week Classes 

Performance Arts:
Intro to Improv: Adults Class (6 Weeks)
Instructor: John Brennan
Ages 18+
Tuesdays, January 24 – February 28, 6:00pm – 7:30pm
This six-week class introduces Savannah’s Improv Company (SiC) method to create improvised scenes based on audience suggestions. Students in “Intro to Improv” will participate in group games and exercises that help everyone remember how to play. The focus will be on having fun and learning how to start an improv scene. As a bonus, you’ll get to perform for friends and family during a recital after the six-week course concludes.
$75/$70 city residents

Metalsmithing and Jewelry:
Open Studio (6 Weeks)
Studio Technician: Tana Fileccia-Flagg
Ages 17+
Mondays, January 23 - February 27, 3:00pm – 6:00pm
Open Studio in metalsmithing and jewelry allows participants time to practice skills learned in previous classes, access to specific materials, tools and equipment, as well as work on personal pieces independently. Fee includes a supply packet. The studio technician will be on hand to oversee students’ use of tools and equipment. Please note this is not an instructional class. This session is open to students who have completed a metalsmithing class in our facility.
$150/$140 city residents

Beginners Jewelry – Intro to Metalsmithing (6 Weeks)
Instructor: Jessica Anderson
Ages 17+
Wednesdays, January 25 – March 1, 12:00pm – 3:00pm
Join this introductory course to metalsmithing! The focus of this six-week course is to introduce basic tools and techniques used by jewelers. Students will learn basic patina, sawing, stamping, hammering, and soldering skills to create several unique pieces of wearable jewelry.
$150/$140 city residents

Glass:
Found Object Stained Glass (6 Weeks) NEW

Ages 17+
Tuesdays, January 24 – February 28, 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Design a one of a kind stained glass piece incorporating your very own found object(s). This six-week class will teach students the basics of stained glass techniques and how to design a work of art around a treasured keepsake. Students will have a finished stained glass piece at the end of the session.
$150/$140 city residents

Glass Beads and Jewelry (Six Weeks) NEW!
Instructor: Crystal Travaille
Ages 17+
Tuesdays, January 24 – February 28, 10:00am – 1:00pm
Explore basic flame-working techniques using an oxygen/propane torches to make beautiful glass beads. Students will learn through lecture, demos, and hands-on experience. Safety is of the utmost importance and students are requested to wear natural fiber clothing with long sleeves. You must be 18 or older. Sorry, but this class is not suited for expecting mothers.

Painting and Drawing:
Abstract Painting: Working with Form (6 Weeks) NEW
Instructor: Heather MacRae
Ages: 17+
Fridays, January 27 – March 3, 9:30am – 12:30pm
During this six-week course, students will look at still-life, landscapes, human forms, lines and shapes and learn how to use color, gesture, and mark-making techniques to break down, deconstruct visual subjects and reconstruct those forms onto canvas as two-dimensional art works.
$90/$85 city residents

Mojo Mixing – Intro to Mixed Media Arts (6 Weeks) NEW

Ages: 17+
Wednesdays, January 25 – March 1, 10:00am – 1:00pm
Anything you can think of can become art! Join this six-week course and explore different ways to combine various art mediums together into a fabulous work of art. Students will experiment with a variety of materials like paper, paint, fabric, recycled materials, found objects, etc. to create their own fun and unique artworks.

Ceramics:
All Speeds Wheel – Beginner to Intermediate (6 Weeks)
Instructor: Shawn Patrick PM
Ages 17+
Tuesdays, January 24 – February 28, 6:00pm – 9:00pm
In this class you will learn how to use basic tools and technics to shape clay into functional forms on the pottery wheel. Students will work on refining their skills as they work at their own pace and receive individual attention.

Wheel-Throwing Special Topics: Thrown and Altered (6 Weeks)

Ages 17+
Tuesdays, January 24 – February 28, 9:30am – 12:30pm
Take your pottery skills to the next level! Transform your traditional round pots into functional one of a kind works of art. This class will push your throwing skills and stretch your imagination. Come clay with us! Prior wheel experience is necessary.

Beginning Wheel (6 Weeks)

Ages 17+
Wednesdays, January 25 – March 1, 9:30am – 12:30pm
This introductory class will teach you the basics of throwing clay on the potter’s wheel. Trimming and decorative techniques will be taught to give each vessel its own flair. Students will work at their own pace and receive individual attention.

Hand-building and Intro to Sculpture (6 Weeks)

Ages 17+
Thursdays, January 26 – March 2, 9:30am – 12:30pm
This fun class will focus on learning and implementing basic skills used in hand building and sculpture. It is a project driven class with free time to explore individual projects as well. Come clay with us!

Open Studio with Dave (6 Weeks)

Thursdays, January 26 – March 2, 6:00pm – 9:00pm
The open studio session allows students time to practice skills learned in previous clay classes. This is not an instructional class. This session is open to students who have completed a ceramics class in our facility.

The open studio session allows students time to practice skills learned in previous clay classes. This is not an instructional class. This six session studio time offers the freedom to come one or two times a week. Additional sessions can be purchased as needed. This session is open to students who have completed a ceramics class in our facility.
