Walkable communities expert to lead public forum
What can Savannah do to calm traffic and make our community more pedestrian and bicycle friendly? Find out from the nation's leading expert on walkable communities during a special public forum next week.
Dan Burden, named "one of the six most important civic innovators in the world" by
Time Magazine
, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, in the Armstrong Center, 13040 Abercorn St. (site of the old Publix near the Savannah Mall). The forum, titled "Creating Walkable Communities in Savannah," is sponsored by the City of Savannah Mobility and Parking Services Department.
Mr. Burden is founder of the nonprofit Walkable Communities Inc. (www.walkable.org). The State of Florida's former Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator, he has over 37 years of experience in developing alternative transportation facilities, traffic calming practices and sustainable community design. He has personally evaluated walking, bicycling, placemaking and town center conditions in more than 2,500 cities in the United States and abroad.
