Walking Tour Guidelines
Revised Walking Tour Guidelines (August 7, 2003)

Definitions

Walking Tour
  • A walking tour is a guided narrated tour conducted on foot by a licensed tour guide on sidewalks and squares
  • Motor Coach walk through narrates only in squares

    Walking Tour Guide
  • Any person who has passed the tour guide examination and has received the appropriate certification, a tour guide permit. Having received certification, walking tour guides are permitted to conduct walking tours in any area of the City

    Walking Tour Escort
  • A person who accompanies a group under the supervision of a licensed tour guide without giving a narrated tour

    Hotspots
  • Sections of the City, designated by the City Manager with the concurrence of the Mayor and Aldermen; in which walking tours may not operate at certain times
Walking Tour Provisions

    Walking tour Hotspots
  • Walking tours are prohibited in hotspot areas of the City between 8PM and 10AM (November 1 – Last day of February) and 9:30PM and 10AM (March 1 – October 31). Initially the only hotspot in the City is the 400 and 500 blocks of east St. Julian Street between Warren and Washington Squares. Walking tours are prohibited from stopping in hotspots.

    Prohibited Conduct
  • Walking tour guides and guests shall refrain from encroaching on private property including, but not limited to, trees and bushes, tree lawns, porches, gardens, steps, and streets open to motor vehicle traffic. It is the tour guides’ responsibility to make their guests aware of these prohibitions and encourage compliance

    Limitation on Number of Guests Per Tour
  • Walking tours are limited to 30 guests per licensed tour guide
  • Motor Coach walk-throughs must have an escort with more than 30 guests
