Savannah's Place for Art, Culture & Education (S. P. A. C. E.)
Established in 1999 by the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs, Savannah's Place for Art, Culture and Education (S. P. A. C. E.) has been serving as the city’s arts education hub and providing a place for the community to gather, inspire, create and enjoy for ten years. The 10,000 square foot cultural center is home to DCA's offices as well as a community art gallery, black box theatre and art studios. Each year, thousands visit S.P.A.C.E. to participate in offerings from classes and art camps, to lectures, theatre productions and gallery exhibitions. S. P. A. C. E. is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and nights and weekends when programs are in session. S. P. A. C. E. is located at 9 W. Henry St. (between Bull and Whitaker Streets). Free, off-street parking is available in the lot adjacent to our building.
Gallery S. P.A. C. E.
Gallery S.P.A.C.E. is a community exhibition space. The gallery is host to approximately nine shows per year. Exhibitions range from youth and solo shows to group and traveling exhibitions. Shows on display are free and open to the public. Each exhibition includes an opening reception and an outreach program which enriches the learning experience for our visitors. Outreach can include school workshops, lectures, demonstrations and more. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional night and weekend hours based on programming. Artists interested in exhibiting at Gallery S.P.A.C.E. may submit a proposal for consideration.
The Black Box at S.P.A.C.E.
The Black Box at S.P.A.C.E. is home to Savannah's Cultural Arts Theatre, a community theater that provides access to the theatre arts for Savannah residents and visitors. Cultural Arts Theatre (CAT) offers opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to audition, rehearse and perform in professionally-staged theatre productions. In addition to several small-scale productions staged in the Black Box at S.P.A.C.E. throughout the year, CAT also presents a large-scale musical production in a local theatre during the summer. In addition to CAT's season schedule, classes, workshops, demonstrations and other learning opportunities in the theatre arts are also provided. Tickets are affordably priced and school presentations are available.
Studio S. P. A. C. E.
Studio S. P. A. C. E. is comprised of several community workshops devoted to nurturing the creative process. Several sessions of visual and performing arts classes and workshops are presented by professional artists for students of all ages and skill levels throughout the year. Classes can range from jewelry and metals to ceramics, glass, performing arts and more. Class fees are nominal and include instruction, studio use and all materials required.
Studio S. P. A. C. E. is also the venue for the Department's popular Spring Break and Summer Art Camps. Our camps provide opportunities for children ages 5-14 to sample a range of artistic mediums, including painting, ceramics, metalwork, mixed media and performing arts while having a great time! Space is limited and advance registration is required.
