Bonaventure Administrative Building
The Evergreen Cemetery Company of Bonaventure had a keeper’s house built near the main entrance of the cemetery prior to 1880. The house was a one story frame shingle roof building which occupied the site until 1918. The keeper’s house was in dilapidated condition when the City of Savannah purchased Bonaventure in 1907 and was in the way of the planned main entrance.
The keeper’s house was repeatedly repaired and made habitable until a two-story, red-brick building with a slate roof was constructed in 1918. The new building was near the site of the former one-story keeper’s house, but not in the way of the entrance as it was built. The 1918 building is now the Bonaventure Administrative Building which serves as headquarters for the City of Savannah Department of Cemeteries. It sits between the two sets of granite columns supporting the wrought iron entrance gates. |
