Vital Records Management

The department maintains ownership records of interment rights and interment records on more than 100,000 persons who have been interred in the municipal cemeteries. Many of the original records were hand-written in oversized record books which have become deteriorated due to age and regular use. These fragile ledger books are being retired as vital records are backed up elsewhere. There are currently card files in the cemetery offices where staff can quickly find vital information by the deceased name or lot number. Some of the information has been published in book form and is available to the public at locations such as the Live Oak Public Library, Georgia Historical Society, and the Georgia State Archives:

“Colonial Cemetery” (names on stones available in 1938)
"Early Deaths in Savannah, Georgia, 1763-1803" (Colonial Park Cemetery +)

"Laurel Grove North 1852 - 1935" (4 volumes)

More than 130,000 cemetery records have been entered in a mammoth electronic database since 1997 and all historical data will entered by 2007. The public information will be made readily available to the general public on the World Wide Web by 2008.
