Ancient Statuary

Spencer P. Shotter owned Greenwich from 1897 to 1917 and turned it into the most magnificent, privately-owned estate in the entire South. He placed the elegant white marble fountain in front of the mansion and collected ancient statuary to decorate the manicured gardens of the rural estate. At least some of the statuary remained with the estate when it was acquired by Dr. H. N. Torrey in 1917 and at least fourteen pieces remained on the grounds after the mansion was destroyed in 1923. When the City of Savannah purchased the property as an addition to Bonaventure Cemetery in 1933 it acquired twelve of the pieces. Two pieces (sphinxes) from the collection had been sold to a private collector before the City purchased Greenwich.

The statuary was stored by the City until 1965, when the seven best pieces were placed on public display at the Telfair Academy of Arts:
  • Two Janus Heads with plinths (Greek)
  • One Fire God Statue with plinth (7th century French)
  • One Water God Statue with plinth (7th century French)
  • Two Roman busts (100 A.D.)
  • One bust of Roman Emperor Caracalla (3rd Century)

Five damaged pieces remain in storage:
  • One Rams Griffins Stand (early Renaissance)
  • Two Roman busts (100 A.D.)
  • One Greek bust (200 A.D.)
  • One Roman Sarcophagus (3rd Century)
