Cemetery Monument Conservation (Colonial Bronze Eagle)

The stately bronze eagle perched atop the granite arch at the main entrance to Colonial Park Cemetery was cleaned, inspected, repainted and lacquered in 2005. The main entrance was closed for two weeks while conservators meticulously worked from scaffolding to conserve the century-old sculpture. The project was completely funded by the Savannah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution which erected the arch in 1913. The organization is urging other civic organizations to sponsor similar conservation projects for other public monuments in Savannah. The eagle is the most significant bronze conservation project completed solely by in-house personnel.
