Bike takes 1st, bus 2nd in Dump the Pump ChallengeIn a close race for crown of Savannah's first ever Dump the Pump Challenge, the winner was the trusty bicycle.
Savannah Alderman Tony Thomas hung a special Dump the Pump gold medal around cyclist Frank McIntosh's neck after McIntosh crossed the finish line first at 8:53 a.m. It took McIntosh about 23 minutes to bike from the 12 Oaks Shopping Center south of DeRenne Avenue to City Hall on Bay Street. The bus took second 3 minutes behind, followed by the car at 8:59 a.m.
"I think this is one of the greatest places in the world to bike -- for at least six months out of the year, there are absolutely perfect riding conditions," said McIntosh, a member of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign. "If I have to take a trip that is less than two miles, I always bike, and I encourage others to do the same. It's easier and faster."
It's cheaper too. According to AAA, it costs an average of 89.7 cents per mile to drive an SUV one mile, including gas, insurance and maintenance costs. That's about $4.48 for the 5-mile Dump the Pump course, plus more than $1 per hour for parking. Riding a bus is a $1 one-way fare, with no parking costs. McIntosh calculated that he spends about 4 cents per mile in maintenance expenses on his bicycle, costing him about 20 cents for the race. Read more...
