Portrait Paintings by Arthur Milton
Savannah native and artist Arthur Milton will present an exhibition of portrait paintings at Gallery S.P.A.C.E. August 6 – September 3.
The exhibition is a compilation of works over the past 20 years and includes large scale celebrity, family and presidential images in this solo exhibition. The portraits include favorites such as Lou Rawls, Dolly Parton, and Oprah Winfrey. Other highlights include the Presidential First Family, a recent inspiration to the artist.
“I’m a big fan of the grassroots hero as well as the mainstream hero that gives back to the community. They often serve as inspiration for my work,” says Milton, who has presented a number of celebrities with their portraits, including Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, and Muhammad Ali. “I love the smile that appears on the person’s face when they see themselves in my work.”
Milton received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from SCAD and was a member of the first graduating class in 1982. He received a Master of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, MD. Local commissions includes a portrait painted for the Martin Luther King , Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee that now hangs in the Savannah Civic Center’s Arena, as well as the more recent representation of Lt.General Walter Gaskin of Savannah, whose portrait will be unveiled at the August 6 opening reception.
The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. S.P.A.C.E. is located at 9 W. Henry St. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free off-street parking is available. For information, contact 912-651-6783 or visit www.savannahga.gov/arts.

Four Square Exhibition
Opening Reception, Sept. 17, 5–7 p.m.
Film Screening: Who Does She Think She Is?October 28, 7 p.m.
Parent & Child Handbuilding Ceramics Workshop, Saturdays, October 2 -23
Four squared is an exhibition by four artist-mothers and their experiences of making art amongst the chaos of raising young children. The experience of being a mother is also the subject of their art – what the artists describe as the push & pull of motherhood, domesticity and creativity. Featuring the artwork of Linette Dubois, Ashley Waldvogel, Melinda Schawel, and Atsuko Smith.
In conjunction with the exhibition, don't miss the screening of Who Does She Think She Is?on October 28. A documentary by Academy Award-winning producer Pamela Tanner Boll, the film features five bold women who navigate some of the most problematic intersections of our time: parenting and creativity, partnering and independence, economics and art. This film raises important questions about how art is valued in our culture. Followed by a discussion with the Four Squared artists. Free and open to the public.
