Taiwan Sublime
Four Taiwanese photographers capture Taiwan’s natural beauty, performing arts, spirituality and daily life.
The exhibition showcases the works of four of Taiwan's most brilliant photographers, each artist a specialist in his own photographic genre. The four have travelled the length and breadth of Taiwan to create a stunning visual record. Their collected work highlights both the natural beauty of Taiwan and the cultural splendor which has evolved through its many religious, spiritual and artistic traditions.
Each series in the exhibition focuses on a particular theme and style. Chi Po- Lin’s work gives the viewer an eagle’s eye view of the breathtaking Taiwanese landscape, with pictures taken from high altitude—some from up to 14,000 feet. Chen Chi-hsiung, a self-taught master renowned for his use of contour and texture, photographs the ways in which people inhabit and transform the landscape.
In contrast, Lui Chen-hsiang has dedicated his work to capturing the magic of theatre, from traditional village entertainment to sophisticated, hi-tech performance art. Huang Ting-shen, meanwhile, has focused on the intense and often crowded world of Taiwan’s many religious rituals. His work gives the viewer a rare glimpse of sacred practices which are usually only accessible through written records.
The four series dovetail to present a stunning overview of a fascinating country.
