2005 Litter Index

Keep Savannah Beautiful is in the process of conducting the 2005 Litter Index Survey. The Litter Index is a tool designed by Keep America Beautiful to measure the level of litter in Savannah neighborhoods. Keep America Beautiful requires their affiliates to conduct the Litter Index Survey and report the results to the KAB national office. This data is used by KAB to identify national trends regarding litter and related community issues. Locally, the data can be used to target services, resources and program.

When used regularly, the Litter Index can also be used to measure the effectiveness of strategies utilized by local municipalities and their impact on litter reduction. It is a simple tool that will allow a quick and reliable visual assessment of the litter presence in the community. This year, Keep Savannah Beautiful will survey 5 blocks in each of the 89 neighborhoods. Each neighborhood and Aldermanic District will be given a Litter Index score.

The Litter Index uses a four-point system to estimate the presence of litter in the area being surveyed. A team of three of more volunteers surveys each district. The surveyors drives through the district and give each street a score, rating the amount of litter observed as follows:

1 = “no litter”. Practically no litter can be observed. Any litter seen could be quickly collected by one individual.

2 = “slightly litter”. A small amount of litter is observed and can be collected by one or two individuals in a short period of time.

3 = “littered”. Visible litter can be seen throughout the surveyed area and will require an organized effort for removal.

4 = “extremely littered”. A large amount of litter can be observed and will require equipment and/or extra manpower for removal.

The scores are then tabulated and averaged for the district Index Score.
