City To Donate Extra Meals To Feed Those In Need

Savannah, GA (September 5, 2019) –The City of Savannah today will donate nearly 2,400 meals intended for hurricane first responders and use them instead to help feed those in need.

The first meal will be at 6 p.m. tonight at Savannah Feed the Hungry, located at 4704 Augusta Road. Nearly 800 hot dinners will be served, and the public is invited. They will be joined by Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach, Garden City Mayor Don Bethune, and State Rep. Carl Gilliard, CEO of Feed the Hungry.

The City of Savannah had contracted with a caterer to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for 800 first responders who remained in Savannah during Hurricane Dorian and its expected recovery efforts. With damage and debris minimal, demobilization is occurring earlier than expected. That meant the City and caterer had already purchased food for tonight’s dinner, along with tomorrow’s breakfast and lunch.

Instead of letting the food go to waste, the City looked for a way to donate the meals to those in need.

“We know a lot of businesses that sell food aren’t going to be open today, and a lot of residents are going to be hungry,” Mayor DeLoach said. “Many people have been severely disrupted this week, and this is one way to welcome them back home.”

Rep. Gilliard’s Savannah Feed the Hungry stepped up to the plate, and quickly organized a team to receive, organize and serve the food.

“We truly are one community, and during times like this we all come together,” Rep. Gilliard said.
