Savannah Fire Responds to Multiple Labor Day Emergencies

SAVANNAH, GA (Monday, September 3, 2018) – Savannah Fire responded to multiple incidents on Labor Day 2018, including a kitchen fire that displaced a family of four and left one man with injuries.

Savannah Fire's busy Labor Day began with a flooding issue in an apartment at Sustainable Fellwood, located at 1325 Exley St. A resident left a pot on a stove, which caught fire and triggered the sprinkler system. Although the fire was quickly extinguished, the home suffered minor flooding. No one was displaced.

Shortly after that, at 1:41 p.m., Savannah Fire was dispatched to the McDonald’s Restaurant at 2701 Montgomery Street. Customers complained of breathing issues and a chemical smell in the restaurant. Firefighters arrived on scene within two minutes at 1:43 p.m. They discovered that employees had used a commercial fire extinguisher to put out a small blaze behind an appliance earlier in the day. The customers were smelling the chemicals from the extinguisher. The restaurant was closed until cleared for reopening by the health department.

At 4:55 p.m. during the electrical storm, Savannah Fire units were dispatched to Azalea Nursing Home at 2040 Colonial Drive, regarding a power outage.

Then 5:24 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a row house at 616 W. 41st Street. Units arrived on scene within two minutes at 5:26 p.m. An occupant of the home fell asleep while cooking. The pot caught fire and triggered the sprinkler system. Although the fire was quickly extinguished and did not extend into the structure, the family of four who resides there was displaced by the water damage. One of the residents was burned trying to put the fire out. He was transported to Memorial Medical Center for treatment. The Red Cross was asked to assist the family.
