The Business and Alcohol Regulations Unit is an extension of the Revenue Department. This unit is responsible for the billing and collecting of taxes and regulatory fees associated with businesses operating in the City of Savannah.
Business Tax Certificates
Businesses operating in the City of Savannah are required to have a business tax certificate instead of a business license. The business tax certificate is required by Article Y, Business Tax, of the current City of Savannah, Georgia Revenue Ordinance. A business tax certificate is the document issued by the City’s Business and Alcohol Regulations Division to a business, occupation, home occupation, or profession as evidence that the business tax has been paid for the calendar year or the remaining portion of the year in the case of a new business.
The business tax must be paid on or before January 31st and expires on December 31st of the year of issuance. However, a business may continue to operate on its previous year’s expired certificate until the due date for renewal.
